Duties: 

 

Responsibilities: As an Oncology/Hematology Physician, you will be providing care at the Washington DC VA Medical Center (VAMC) and/or associated Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs) responsible for providing expert clinical care in outpatient settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The Oncology/Hematology Physician's actual clinical activity shall be a function of the VAMC Executive Committee of the Medical Staff clinical privileging process and the overall demand for emergency services.

  • Provides direct hands-on inpatient care for patients with Oncologic and Hematologic conditions. Assesses patients for acute illness and determine whether patients need to be admitted to the hospital or managed in the outpatient setting. Manages chronic disease.

  • Responsible for participating in Oncology/Hematology consult service.

  • Provides clinical guidance over the phone, by Secure Messaging and through the mail. Participates in tele-health with CBOCs and other health care locations to help care for patients remotely. Ensures accurate documentation of medical assessments and observations.

  • Responsible for supervising and teaching medical residents and students to include teaching at affiliated Academic partners. May be required to oversee mid-level practitioners, such as nurse practitioners or physician assistants.

  • Participates in various Oncology and Hematology Section and Medical Service Conferences as required. Engages in research by performing, supervising, acquiring results and presenting and publishing data, in a manner consistent with VA research policies.

  • Establishes inter-personal and intra-departmental relationships to enhance optimal patient care.

  • Demonstrates competent and effective oral and written communication.

  • Provides appropriate patient/family member teaching and education; evaluates effectiveness and level of patients/family member understanding or teaching provider.

  • Utilizes the CPRS computer software/program for entering and signing of medical orders such as laboratory studies, radiological studies, etc.

  • Maintains familiarity and compliance with hospital infection prevention policies and procedures, ensuring the use of antiseptic methods of all in-clinic procedures.

  • Ensures a safe work environment and employee safe work habits.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Night, weekend, and holiday call is required in rotation with other faculty.
