Dear Members,
Welcome
to the 2009 winter newsletter! I’ve heard from many of you
who have enjoyed the AVAHO meeting in Minneapolis in September
and I’ve heard some concerns. Please keep sending in your
comments and we will adjust the 2010 meeting accordingly. Some
of you wanted more focus on the abstracts, and we’ll do
that. Some of you wanted disease-based sub-meetings and so we'll
organize break-out sessions by disease group rather than type
of job in the VA. Since the meeting, we’ve had elections
for the Board of Directors. All of the candidates were outstanding,
and those who won did so by small numbers. We congratulate all
of the winners, Dr. Suman Kambhampati as President-Elect (and
vice president for this year), Dr. JoAnne Harrington as Secretary,
and Dr. Daniel Vaena and Kothanur Rajanna as members at large.
Sue has listed some biographical information about each of our
new members of the Board of Directors. Please read the blurbs
so you know your leaders better, and please consider nominating
yourself or someone you know and respect at next year's meeting.
It's never too early to prepare.
In addition to members of the Board of Directors, we need more volunteers to participate. At the present moment we need enthusiastic volunteers to join any and all of our committees. The present committees are the membership, program, governance, education and pharmacy, finance, tumor-specific, palliative, and psycho-social committees. Please consider joining (or leading) one or more of these groups. Let us know who you are, which committee you want to join, what you’re willing to do and how much time you have. AVAHO can't grow unless members like you step forward and help it grow. Please volunteer and please let us know what you'd like to do for AVAHO!
Someone once said there are 4 phases to every meeting: preparing
for the meeting, doing the meeting, reflecting on the meeting,
and preparing for the next one. By that count, we have only finished
phase 3 of the 2009 meeting and are now working on phase 4. Luckily
phase 4 of the 2009 meeting will coincide with phase 1 of the
2010 meeting, so we'll be doing two phases at the same time.
We've been planning for the 2010 meeting and have some updates
to share with you. First, we plan to do the meeting in Little
Rock, Arkansas October 8-10, 2010. The meeting will be back to
back with Columbus Day; hopefully letting some of you stay an
extra day or two to bask in the warmth of this charming southern
city. Sue Lentz will be describing the hotel and some of our proposed
events in her column so be sure to read it carefully and block
out your dates now.
Now is the time to start preparing for an abstract to present at the oral or poster presentation sessions being planned for the 2010 session. Give it your best shot, use your best data, write your best abstract ever, and come prepared to discuss it with your colleagues. At AVAHO, our colleagues are all warm and supportive people who will help you accomplish your goals and your dreams.
